Like I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I am a perfectionist by nature and struggle all the time with staying optimistic when I don’t see results right away. When I’m putting in the hard work, it’s hard to stay motivated if I still feel stuck in place.
In the past year, something I’ve dealt with is figuring out what I’m going to do with my life, which is an incredibly difficult but exciting thing to think about. As I’ve found out since I left college (almost 3 years ago!!), it is not as simple as just picking a job and making it work. I’ve realized that if I can’t find a job that I am truly passionate about, I’m not going to be happy. Coming to this realization has not been easy, however. Fear of the unknown is never the most comfortable feeling, and because of this, I have had to find different ways to stay motivated even when I’ve felt like giving up.
Find something you’re truly passionate about
Like I mentioned above, I have had to really examine my life and my interests and figure out what I’m truly passionate about in the past year. In my opinion, if you’re trying to stay motivated, you have to really feel passionate about what you’re doing with your life. It’s hard to go to that 9-to-5 job or go through with that afternoon workout if you’re bored or uninterested. And more than that, if you’re taking on something long-term, whether that be a job or a big project, shouldn’t you at least be happy doing it? It just seems silly to me to focus so much on something if you don’t really care about it.
Of course, there are boring things we have to do that are necessary, like doing taxes or pumping gas, but I do think it’s important to be as excited as you can be about things that are happening in your life.
Come up with small goals
I’ve found that making small goals is always easier than trying to tackle large endeavors. It is very easy to feel overwhelmed when you’re starting something new, and this has happened often to me. I am the type of person who tries to go all in on a project. I start to feel overwhelmed with trying to do too much at once, and suddenly, I decide to give up on whatever I’m trying to do.
My advice is to come up with a few small goals that you know you will be able to accomplish, and then go from there. It’s important to feel challenged as well, because otherwise life can get boring, but accomplishing tasks easily can also increase confidence. This will help you to get more done in the long run, and you’ll feel like you’re really making a difference. I always find that if I feel like I’m getting more done, I’m more motivated to finish.
Believe in yourself
Believing in myself is something else that I’ve often struggled with. I am not a naturally confident person. Whenever someone compliments me on something I’ve done, it can be hard for me to accept. Over time, I have slowly become more confident in myself. Staying positive is something that I’ve had to work through, and I’ve had to train myself not to have self-deprecating thoughts.
I’ve also realized over time that I need to believe in myself if I’m ever going to accomplish anything. When you believe in yourself and what you’re doing, it gets easier to be more motivated in daily life. You’ll be more apt to go through with those small goals if you truly believe that what you’re doing is important. You have to find something you’re passionate about, but you also need to believe you can actually do it.
For anyone who is struggling to stay motivated, I feel you! I am not perfect, and I still struggle to not give up whenever I’m feeling unmotivated. However, I hope this small amount of advice might be something to help you stay on track and go through with all of your life goals.
